Troubleshooting -- 'The application has failed to start' error running dtSearch Desktop

Last Reviewed: November 4, 2009

Article: DTS0209

Applies to: dtSearch Desktop 7.21 - 7.62

Symptoms

When dtSearch Desktop is launched, the following error message appears:  "This application has failed to start because the application configuration

is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."

Cause

dtSearch Desktop versions 7.21 and later require certain updated Windows components.  If the dtSearch setup program was not executed on a computer (for example, if you try to execute dtSearch Desktop from a network location), then the computer may not have those components.  dtSearch versions 7.63 and later do not require these components.

Resolution (dtSearch 7.41 and later)

There are two ways to install the missing components:
(1) Run the dtSearch Desktop setup program, or

(2) Download and run a small program from Microsoft, vcredist_x86.exe, which will ensure that all of the missing components are installed.  The Microsoft installer is available here:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

If you are using the 64-bit version of the dtSearch Indexer (dtIndexer64.exe), you will also need vcredist_x64.exe, available here:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64)
